Underground warning tape is a separate product: a nominal 4 mil overall-thickness 100% pigmented LDPE (low-density polyethylene) film, acid- and alkali-resistant, lead-free, inert in soil, and color-coded to the American Public Works Association (APWA) utility color convention for protection, location, and identification of buried utilities [S6]. Detectable vs. Non-Detectable: Aluminum Core Changes the Spec

Detectable tape upgrades the construction with a 4.5 mil solid aluminum foil core fully encased in printed polyethylene, visible from both sides, highly reflective, and locatable with a non-ferrous metal detector before any digging starts. Detection depth is a direct function of tape width: 2 in tape detects at 10-14 in, while 6 in tape reaches 24-36 in below grade, so wider detectable rolls are the right pick whenever the utility sits deeper than the 12 in general rule [S4].
Width Selection: Match the Utility, Not the Bucket

The width of warning tape should be greater than or equal to the width of the utility it is being buried over; if the tape is narrower than the utility, an excavator bucket or hand shovel can miss it entirely and the warning system silently fails [S3].
For traditional extruded plastic marking tapes, tensile strength scales with material volume, so wider rolls are also stronger. Detectable tape must sit inside its rated detection window or a pre-excavation sweep will not find it; burying a 2 in detectable roll at 24 in puts it outside the 10-14 in detection envelope and wastes the metal core's value [S4]. Utility-specific trench depths for electrical, gas, water, and telecom lines then dictate where the tape sits inside that band, which is why depth cannot be specified independently of utility class.
APWA Color Code and Substrate Discipline

APWA color codes assign a specific color to each utility class (red for electric, yellow for gas/oil, blue for potable water, green for sewer, orange for telecom/fiber, purple for reclaimed water), and the marking tape laid above the line must match the color of the utility below it so a locator or excavator reads the legend at a glance [S4][S6].
For fire-protection contexts the substrate matters as much as the color: 100% pigmented LDPE with extruded lamination survives soil chemistry, while ink-coated films lose their legend within a few seasons of backfill contact [S5]. Where Each Tape Fits and Where It Fails
