Alloy steel price per kg: grade, condition, region (Oct 2026)

As of October 2026, alloy steel price per kg spans roughly US$0.55–1.10/kg for engineering bar in Asia, US$0.85–1.50/kg in Europe, and US$0.80–1.80/kg in the United States, with 4140/4340/EN24 sitting at the low end of the high-alloy range and case-hardening grades such as 18CrNiMo7-6 and 16MnCr5 commanding a 20–40% premium [S1][S2][S4][S6].

Condition matters as much as grade: hot-rolled bars price 8–15% below cold-drawn, quenched and tempered (Q&T) bars price 12–25% above hot-rolled, and annealed/normalized rounds sit roughly at hot-rolled parity with a small testing surcharge [S1][S9]. Round-bar assessments from Ex-Mumbai (07 Oct 2026) confirm 50 mm vs 200 mm size differences move price 6–10% within the same grade, and that electric arc furnace (EAF) and basic oxygen furnace (BF) routes are quoted on separate line items even at identical chemistry [S5].

Price bands by grade family, October 2026

4140 (AISI/SAE, 1.7225, 42CrMo4) round bar prices approximately US$0.55–0.95/kg on B2B platforms in Q2 2026, while 4340 (1.6582, 34CrNiMo6) prices about 15–20% higher because of its nickel content (1.5–2.0% Ni) [S9]. Engineering grades such as EN8 / C45 (1.0503) and EN1A (1.0711) price at the carbon-steel-plus tier, around US$0.55–0.85/kg in India domestic supply [S1][S5].

Case-hardening grades price higher than through-hardening grades of similar carbon level: 18CrNiMo7-6 (1.6587) and 16MnCr5 (1.7131) are routinely quoted US$0.95–1.40/kg ex-Europe, with a noticeable Indian-domestic differential [S1][S5]. Bearing-grade SAE 52100 (1.3505, 100Cr6) and tool-grade EN31 sit at the upper end of engineering alloy pricing, frequently in the US$1.10–1.60/kg range for Q&T bar [S5].

Stainless is a separate cost regime and should not be conflated with alloy steel in procurement math: 304 contains roughly 8–10.5% Ni with no deliberate Mo, 316 typically adds 2–3% Mo, and 904L pulls in 19–23% Ni plus 4–5% Mo plus 1–2% Cu, which is what produces the multi-dollar premium over 304 [S3]. The driver stack for stainless is Ni + Cr + Mo + Cu, not the iron-cementite baseline that defines low-alloy steel pricing.

Regional spread and what it actually reflects

Q2 2026 assessments put alloy steel per metric ton at US$510 in China, US$524 in India, US$557 in Japan, US$653 in the UK, and US$723 in the USA, a roughly 42% spread between the cheapest and most expensive regional benchmarks [S6]. The Northeast Asia benchmark was reported as US$0.59/kg, unchanged in September 2026 [S2].

The U.S. premium is policy-driven, not just cost-driven: the Section 232 tariff on imported steel was doubled to 50% in June 2025, and U.S. mill-product prices climbed over 20% year-over-year through January 2026, with hot-rolled coil (HRC) moving from about US$800 to around US$1,200 per short ton in a year [S2]. For alloy bar specifically, that means a buyer in Houston may pay 30–55% more than the same bar landed in Rotterdam or Busan, even after sea freight.

Europe and the UK sit between the U.S. and Asia, but with a nickel-heavy mix in the bar basket (Europe runs a higher share of Ni-bearing grades than India), so the regional spread is wider in grade-weighted comparisons than in headline per-ton figures [S2][S6]. India is the most price-competitive for low-Ni engineering grades thanks to integrated BF capacity and large domestic scrap flows, but imports of 18CrNiMo7-6 and SAE 52100 remain necessary because domestic EAF output is intermittent on those grades [S5].

Condition (heat treatment + finish) as a cost multiplier

Hot-rolled (HR) round bar is the reference condition. Cold-drawn (CD) bar typically adds 8–15% on top because of drawing dies, yield loss, and tighter dimensional tolerance (commonly h9/h10 on diameter, vs. the looser K12 of HR) [S1]. Peeled / turned bar (often h11) sits between HR and CD, with the peeled surface removing the decarburised skin and exposing clean sub-surface for machined components [S5].

Quenched and tempered (Q&T) bar carries the largest condition premium, typically 12–25% over HR depending on through-section hardness requirements. For 4140, specifying Q&T to 28–32 HRC versus as-rolled can swing the same 100 mm bar from roughly US$0.75/kg to about US$0.95/kg in Indian supply [S1][S5]. Annealed (A) and normalized (N) conditions sit at HR parity, with annealing adding typically 2–4% for spheroidize anneal cycles required for heavy machining of 52100 and EN31 [S1].

Surface condition and ultrasonic testing (UT) add smaller but non-trivial surcharges. Procurement teams should not compare bar line-items against component line-items on a per-kg basis; the kg boundaries are not equivalent.

What is driving the 2026 alloy steel price stack

Raw-material inputs dominate the alloy steel cost stack. Iron ore on the Dalian exchange hit an 18-month low in October 2026, with the most-traded contract closing at its weakest level since April 2025 [S2]. Coking coal spiked by roughly a third in August 2026 on safety inspections at Chinese mines, a key structural cost for BF-route producers [S2]. Together these two inputs set the steel base, and the alloy premium (Ni, Cr, Mo, V, B) stacks on top.

Energy, scrap, and trade policy are the second-tier drivers. European mills carry higher energy surcharges, U.S. mills carry the 50% Section 232 import tariff, and EAF-route producers (favoured in India and the U.S. for low-capex flexibility) are more sensitive to scrap prices than BF-route producers, which are more sensitive to iron ore and coking coal [S2][S5]. Ferromanganese, ferrochrome, and ferronickel surcharges layer in additional volatility, especially when LME nickel moves.

Grade chemistry is the third driver, and it is a non-linear function of alloy content. Adding Mo to 316 stainless (typically 2–3% Mo) versus 304 stainless is a similar non-linear jump in the per-kg cost [S3].

How to read and act on an alloy steel price quote

Alloy steel quotes decompose into base price + alloy surcharge + size premium + condition premium + quantity break + delivery + tariff or duty. Stainless procurement applies the same formula but with a much larger alloy surcharge band driven by Ni and Mo [S3]. For low-alloy engineering bar the alloy surcharge is typically 3–8% of the base, for Ni-bearing grades it is 8–18%, and for stainless it is 25–45% of the all-in price [S1][S3][S5].

Procurement should normalise quotes to the same reference before comparing. A 100 mm SAE 1018 hot-rolled round in Mumbai (BF route, 2–4 week delivery) is not the same product as a 100 mm 4140 Q&T round in Houston landed from an EAF mill, even if both quotes state US$0.85/kg [S5]. Match on grade chemistry, condition, dimensional tolerance, UT class, and Incoterm before reading the number.

Forward signals worth tracking for the next quarter: Dalian iron ore above US$100/MT, LME nickel above US$18,000/MT, U.S. HRC holding above US$1,000/short ton, and any change in the Section 232 rate, all of which would shift the alloy steel price stack within 4–8 weeks.

Buyers specifying alloy steel for general machining and fabrication can read a current 4140/EN19 price band as the reference floor, and should expect to pay roughly 1.15–1.25x that for 4340/EN24, 1.25–1.50x for 18CrNiMo7-6 / EN36 case-hardening bar, and 1.50–2.00x for SAE 52100 / EN31 bearing and tool bar, with stainless and super-austenitic grades entering a separate cost regime [S1][S3][S9]. Reference alloy and plate sizing choices for structural work in alloy steel plate thickness range guidance sits alongside the bar pricing discussed here.
