A fire hydrant, also called a fire plug, is an above-ground or below-ground outlet permanently connected to a pressurized municipal or private water main, providing fire crews and sprinkler-supply pumpers with rapid access to fire-fighting water. Functionally it is a single large isolation valve plus a manifold of standardized outlets. When the operating nut at the top is turned, the main valve at the base opens against system pressure and water flows up the barrel to the hose and pumper nozzles. The defining engineering requirement is that this happens reliably after years of dormancy, in any weather, with no leakage when closed.

The modern post-type fire hydrant traces to the mid-nineteenth century. The dry-barrel principle, keeping the control valve below the frost line so the standing barrel drains empty, was developed in the United States in the 1800s precisely to solve winter freezing and remains the basis of AWWA C502 today. The breakable, or traffic-model, design that lets a struck hydrant shear cleanly at grade and be repaired without excavation became standard in the twentieth century and is now nearly universal on US municipal hydrants.
In scale terms a hydrant is rated by the fire flow it can deliver at a usable residual pressure. NFPA 291 classifies hydrants by the flow available at 20 psi (1.4 bar) residual: Class AA delivers 1,500 gpm (5,680 L/min) or more, down to Class C below 500 gpm (1,890 L/min). A single 5-1/4 in (133 mm) main valve on an adequately sized main can pass well over 1,500 gpm. Dry-barrel hydrants are the dominant type across North America. The main valve sits at the base of the barrel, below the local frost line, where it seals the supply. When the hydrant is shut, a small bronze drain valve, mechanically linked to the main valve, opens and lets the water remaining in the barrel drain into the surrounding gravel pocket, leaving the upper barrel empty and freeze-safe. This drain interlock is the heart of AWWA C502 design: the main valve and the drain are operated by the same stem, so the barrel cannot be left full and pressurized when nominally closed.
Wet-barrel hydrants, governed by AWWA C503, keep water standing up to a separate compression valve behind each nozzle. The advantage is operational: a pumper can be connected and charged on one outlet while another outlet remains valved off, and individual outlets can be serviced under partial isolation. The decisive disadvantage is that the body holds water year round and will freeze and crack in any sub-zero climate, which restricts wet-barrel hydrants to regions such as coastal California and other frost-free service areas.
European pillar and underground hydrants follow EN 14384 and EN 14339 respectively. Pillar hydrants are above-ground like US post hydrants but are sized by nominal diameter (DN 80, DN 100, DN 150), rated PN 16, fitted with an automatic drain, and use Storz instantaneous couplings rather than NST threads. Underground hydrants per EN 14339 sit in a small chamber below a hinged cover and are operated by a portable standpipe inserted by the brigade, a configuration common in the UK and parts of continental Europe where above-ground obstructions are undesirable.
A second axis of classification is the shutoff mechanism. Compression hydrants use a main valve that seats against the flow, the most common AWWA C502 arrangement, where line pressure assists final sealing. Gate or slide hydrants use a wedge or slide gate moving perpendicular to flow. Compression designs dominate because they reseat cleanly and are simple to rebuild from above grade without excavation.

Internal Mechanism and Operation
The operating chain of a dry-barrel hydrant converts a slow turn of the operating nut into a large axial movement of the main valve. The operating nut, almost always a pentagon to require a special wrench, drives a threaded operating stem. The stem is split at the breakable coupling near grade so a vehicle strike shears it cleanly; the lower stem then drives the main valve disc against or with the seat at the base. A full open typically requires many turns, geared so a single operator can open against full line pressure. Under NFPA 24, the main valve opening of a public hydrant must be at least 5-1/4 in (133 mm), and many municipal specifications mandate exactly that size to guarantee the full hydraulic capacity needed for a Class AA rating. A 4-1/2 in (114 mm) main valve is offered for residential and lighter-duty mains, but it throttles peak flow and is generally not accepted where high fire flow is required. The main valve opening, not the nozzle, is usually the controlling restriction, because all flow passes through that single seat before splitting to the outlets.
The drain valve is the freeze-protection interlock and the most commonly neglected maintenance item. In a dry-barrel hydrant the drain is mechanically tied to the main valve: when the main valve is fully open, the drain ports are sealed so no water is wasted under flow; when the main valve closes, the drain ports open and the barrel empties into the gravel drainage pocket. If the drain clogs with silt, or the surrounding soil is saturated or freezes, the barrel will not empty and the standing water can freeze and crack the casting. AWWA C502 requires the drain to fully close under operating pressure to avoid continuous erosion of the surrounding bedding.
The nozzle section presents the standardized outlets. The conventional municipal arrangement is two 2-1/2 in (65 mm) hose nozzles plus one 4-1/2 in or 5 in (115 or 125 mm) pumper, or steamer, nozzle. US outlet threads follow the NST/NH (National Standard Thread, also called National Hose) profile standardized in NFPA 1963, a parallel thread that seals against a gasket, although many cities historically adopted proprietary local threads. European EN 14384 hydrants substitute Storz instantaneous quarter-turn couplings for threaded outlets. Some modern hydrants now offer a factory Storz pumper outlet even in the US for faster large-diameter hose connection.
The breakable, or traffic, flange is a safety and serviceability feature. A weakened cast flange at grade, paired with a breakable stem coupling, lets a struck hydrant shear off cleanly above the buried section. The water stays controlled by the intact main valve below, and the barrel and bonnet are rebuilt with a repair kit instead of excavating the shoe. This single design choice is why AWWA C502 traffic-model hydrants can be restored to service in hours rather than days.

Materials, Bury Depth and Standards
Material selection determines how long a hydrant survives buried in soil, exposed to weather and traffic, and intermittently flowing aggressive or chlorinated water. AWWA C502 fixes the minimum material grades for the pressure-containing and wetted parts. Modern hydrants have largely moved from grey cast iron to ductile iron for the barrel, bonnet and shoe, because ductile iron tolerates the impact loads of street traffic far better. The table below summarizes the typical materials by component and the standard that governs them.
Ductile iron to ASTM A536, usually grade 65-45-12 (65 ksi tensile, 45 ksi yield, 12% elongation), is the workhorse barrel material. Its elongation is what lets a traffic-model hydrant deform and shear at the breakable flange rather than shatter, and what lets the buried shoe survive ground movement and freeze-thaw heave. Bronze is used for every part that must seal, slide or thread under water: the main valve seat ring, the drain ring, the operating nut, and the stem nut. Bronze resists the dezincification and pitting that would seize a steel thread after years buried in wet soil, which is essential because the seat ring must be removable and replaceable from above grade through the barrel. The bury depth is the defining dimension of a dry-barrel hydrant and the most common ordering error. Bury depth is measured from the centerline of the inlet shoe (or the base flange) up to the ground line at the breakable flange. It must be deep enough to place the main valve and the drain below the local frost line, so the standing water that drains from the barrel cannot freeze the valve shut. Manufacturers supply bury depths in 6 in (150 mm) increments, commonly from about 2 ft 6 in up to 9 ft or more (0.75 to 2.7 m). Order too shallow and the main valve sits in the frost zone; order too deep and the operating nut and nozzles sit too low or the barrel is needlessly tall. Key Specification Parameters
A hydrant spec sheet can list two dozen dimensions, but only a handful drive the selection. The decisive parameters are main valve opening, working pressure class, inlet connection, nozzle configuration and thread, bury depth, and the NFPA 291 flow class the installation will achieve. Each is explained below, with the standard that defines it.
Main valve opening is the diameter of the single seat through which all flow passes, and it caps hydraulic capacity. NFPA 24 requires a minimum 5-1/4 in (133 mm) opening for public hydrants; a 4-1/2 in (114 mm) opening is available for lighter residential duty. Selection Decision Factors
To translate the preceding chapters into a specific model and order, follow the decision sequence below. Most hydrant procurement errors are not subtle hydraulic mistakes but basic mismatches: wrong type for the climate, wrong bury depth, or wrong outlet thread. Walking the steps in order prevents each of them.
Climate and type: Determine whether the location ever freezes. If yes, the hydrant must be dry-barrel to AWWA C502; wet-barrel to AWWA C503 is permissible only in frost-free service areas. In Europe, select pillar (EN 14384) or underground (EN 14339) per the installation style.
Hydraulic capacity: Size the main valve opening for the required fire flow. NFPA 24 requires at least 5-1/4 in (133 mm) for public hydrants; reserve 4-1/2 in (114 mm) for confirmed light-duty residential mains. Verify the supply main is at least 6 in (150 mm) so the hydrant is not starved upstream.

A hydrant lives for decades, gets struck by vehicles, and must be rebuildable in hours.
