Warehouse utility water, compressed-air condensate drains, and chemical-transfer laterals run mostly cold and at moderate pressure, which is exactly the envelope where unplasticized PVC (PVC-U) outperforms metal on installed cost and corrosion resistance [S3].
PVC-U is rated for service pressures of 4, 6, 10, and 16 bar at 20°C, with thermal stability spanning 20-50°C, a flash point of 399°C, an oxygen index of 45%, and a UL 94 V0 flammability rating, all from the FIP technical handbook [S3]. Standard SCH 40 covers residential water at 40-80 PSI, while SCH 80 adds wall thickness for higher commercial pressure, and Class 200 / Class 315 are the irrigation-grade stiffness tiers typically carried in U.S. warehouse inventory [S1].
Material envelope: what PVC-U will and will not do
PVC-U is unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, a rigid resin polymerized from vinyl chloride monomer, developed in 1930 in Germany and now the most widely used water-pipe material in the U.S. and Canada per the Utah State University water-main break study hosted by the PVC Pipe Association [S3][S5]. Density is 1.38 g/cm³ (ISO 1183 / ASTM D792), tensile modulus is 3200 MPa (ISO 527), Shore D hardness sits at 80 (ISO 868), and Charpy impact strength at 23°C measures 5-8 kJ/m² (ASTM D256) [S3]. Minimum Required Strength (MRS) is ≥25.0 MPa at 20°C, which is the basis for the standard 4-16 bar pressure classes [S3].
Thermal conductivity is 0.15 W/m·°C (ASTM C177), low enough that condensate on cold-water lines is virtually eliminated in conditioned warehouse spaces [S3]. The resin is fully compatible with potable water, demineralised water, and foodstuffs under current national and international standards, but it is not recommended for polar organic compounds including many chlorinated and aromatic solvents [S3].
Schedule vs Class: the two sizing systems you will see on the shelf
Two specification systems dominate warehouse shelves, and mixing them up is the most common spec error in renovation work. Iron-pipe-size (IPS) Schedule pipe (SCH 40, SCH 80) is identified by nominal bore and wall thickness, with SCH 80 carrying roughly 20-25% more wall than SCH 40 at the same NPS, the difference that pushes a 2 in. line from ~150 PSI to ~280 PSI at 73°F per ASTM D1785 [S1]. Class pipe (Class 200, Class 315) is rated by working pressure in PSI and is the format preferred for irrigation mains, where Class 200 gives good flexibility for residential turf and Class 315 supplies higher pressure for commercial systems [S1].
Metric warehouse projects will see the ISO-UNI series instead, with metric outside-diameter pipe in sizes from 20 mm through 75 mm common for OEM skid builds, and the full municipal range going from 3 in. up to 60 in. for site water mains [S4][S5]. For metric U-PVC stocked in 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, and 75 mm outside diameters, 63 and 75 mm jump to a higher price tier, doubling the per-foot cost versus 20-50 mm in current U.S. distribution [S4].
Pressure and temperature derating for warehouse duty

Pick a pipe by its pressure class, noting that PVC-U provides thermal stability and chemical and mechanical resistance up to 60°C per the FIP handbook [S3]. The 4-6-10-16 bar service-pressure ladder is valid only at 20°C reference conditions, so any warehouse line passing within 300 mm of a boiler flue, a process heater, or a sun-exposed rooftop run should be re-classed down one step or rerouted [S3].
Standard PVC caps at 140°F (60°C) for any service; above that, switch to CPVC which is rated to 200°F (93°C) and will not warp at the temperatures that soften regular PVC [S1]. For residential-style potable water at 40-80 PSI, SCH 40 handles the duty; for commercial buildings needing higher pressure, specify SCH 80 [S1].
Jointing, supports, and warehouse-specific gotchas
Solvent cement is the default joint for metric PVC-U pressure pipe and metric solvent-weld fittings, with threaded joints used only at transition points, because threaded PVC-U female adapters lose roughly 25% of the pipe's pressure rating at the thread zone [S3]. Threaded joints also require a thread sealant compatible with PVC-U; standard PTFE tape is acceptable, but pipe dope with solvents or aromatic carriers will chemically attack the resin [S1].
Water hammer is the silent killer of irrigation laterals and warehouse wash-down manifolds. A 1 m/s sudden valve closure can spike line pressure to several times working pressure, so specify a wall-thickness class with margin and add water-hammer arrestors on any branch with frequent solenoid or pneumatic valve cycling [S1]. UV exposure degrades standard grey or white PVC over time, so outdoor runs, dock lines, and any pipe routed through unconditioned mezzanine space should be specified with UV-stabilized compound or painted; gray Schedule pipe often carries UV stabilizers already [S1].
Chemical compatibility and what to keep PVC-U away from

PVC-U is resistant to most acids, alkalis, paraffin/aliphatic hydrocarbons, and saline solutions, which is why it dominates the warehouse chemical-drum dispensing room, battery-acid charging stations, and deionized-water loops [S3]. It is NOT compatible with polar organic solvents, including many chlorinated solvents (perchloroethylene, methylene chloride), aromatic solvents (toluene, xylene, benzene), and ketones (acetone, MEK); these will swell, stress-crack, or completely dissolve the wall [S3].
For compressed-air piping, the spec community has moved away from solid PVC-U because of the catastrophic fracture risk on a failed line; use properly rated plastic pipe alternatives such as aluminum-core or PE-RT for air, or step up to copper/steel for any line over 10 bar [S3]. Within the cold-water envelope, however, PVC-U pipe remains the lowest-cost-per-meter option for retrofit and new build, with a service life benchmark above 100 years when installed per the PVC Pipe Association's gasketed-joint installation guide [S5].
What a complete warehouse PVC-U datasheet must list
A specifier should refuse any submittal that does not carry, at minimum, six fields: nominal size (NPS or metric OD), schedule or class, 20°C pressure rating in bar or PSI, operating-temperature range, applicable standard(s) (ASTM D1785 for SCH 40/80 IPS, AWWA C900/C905 for municipal, ISO 1452 for metric pressure), and the joint system (solvent weld, gasketed, or threaded) [S1][S2]. A spec-first datasheet practice, the same discipline applied to pipe fittings and pipe clamps, catches counterfeit or off-spec resin before it lands on the rack.
For warehouse use the realistic duty profile is: potable cold water at 4-6 bar, irrigation mains at Class 200/315 (≈14-22 bar), compressed-air condensate drains at atmospheric, and chemical laterals in the acid/alkali family at 6-10 bar. Stay inside those envelopes and PVC-U delivers the lowest installed cost, the lowest maintenance, and a documented service life past 50 years in buried municipal service, extrapolated to 100+ years per the Folkman study at Utah State University [S5].
Track these three signals over the next quarter: the PVC Pipe Association's 53rd Annual Meeting (April 19-21, 2027, Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) will release the 6th edition Handbook of PVC Pipe, which restructures the design and installation chapters around AWWA and ASTM updates [S5]. The Siffopipeline 2026 PVC-M vs PVC-U comparison provides current sourcing guidance if your project sits at the boundary where modified PVC's higher impact resistance (PVC-M, typically 8-12 kJ/m²) would beat standard PVC-U for above-ground or soil-pulsation service [S6].
