A well-formed steam RFQ locks six parameters per fitting line item — governing standard, material grade, schedule/wall, connection type, size, and inspection scope — because every one of those fields independently swings the unit price, lead time, and weld-procedure qualification path.

This spec map covers saturated and superheated steam service from 0.5″ to 48″ OD, drawing on the ASME B16.9 / B16.11 / B16.25 dimensional families, MSS SP-43 light-wall practice, and the ASTM A234 / A403 / A420 / A815 material families used by current Indian and Chinese mills [S1][S3].

Standard Family and Dimensional Boundary

Buttweld (BW) fittings must be called out to ASME B16.9 for the 1/2″–48″ range, with MSS SP-43 reserved for light-wall stainless where schedule 10S is acceptable [S3]. Socket-weld (SW) and threaded (THD) fittings below 4″ fall under ASME B16.11 with pressure class 2000 / 3000 / 6000 / 9000 explicitly written on the line, not left to the supplier's default [S3]. Forged flanges pair with ASME B16.5 for Class 150–2500, and weld-end prep per ASME B16.25 is mandatory for any BW assembly; B16.25 is what guarantees the bevel angle and root face the welder's WPS expects [S1][S3].

Spec mistakes that trigger requotes: writing "ASME B16" without the suffix digit, omitting the class number on SW/THD lines, and using "ANSI B16.9" interchangeably with "ASME B16.9" (the standards body renamed, but the part number is the same — both are acceptable on the same line). [S1] lists ANSI B-16.5, ANSI B-16.9, ANSI B-16.11, ANSI B-16.28, and MSS SP-43 as a combined offering from a single Indian mill, which is the typical scope a buyer should expect to release in one PO.

Material Grade and the Steam-Service Shortlist

For saturated steam up to ~1.0 MPa (150 psig), ASTM A234 WPB carbon steel is the default; for low-temperature or sour-service steam, ASTM A420 WPL6 is specified because of its notch-toughness testing at −46 °C [S3]. Stainless routes are governed by ASTM A403, with WP304/304L, WP316/316L, WP321, and WP347 as the four common grades, and the "L" variants mandatory for welded service to defeat sensitization in the HAZ [S3]. Schedule is the second-largest price lever after material. Carbon and alloy steel default to STD, XS, XXS, and SCH10–SCH160; stainless defaults are SCH5S / 10S / 40S / 80S, with 10S being the common economic choice for stainless BW [S3]. Connection Type and Fitting Geometry

For each line item, the RFQ must name the fitting type from a fixed list: 90° LR / SR elbow, 90° 3D / 5D bend, 45° elbow, concentric / eccentric reducer, equal / reducing tee, cap, stub end (lap joint), coupling (full / half), union, cross, and o-let (boss) [S1][S3]. The unit weight — and therefore the price — of a 90° LR carbon-steel elbow is typically 1.6–1.8× the weight of the equivalent straight pipe of the same schedule; this ratio lets the buyer cross-check quoted weights against an internal estimate.

Where the run is a steam header with branch takeoffs, the o-let family (weldolet, sockolet, thredolet, nipolet, elbolet, latrolet) is the preferred butt-weld branch fitting over a fabricated tee, because it reduces the local stress concentration at the header penetration [S1]. A buyer who needs 200 elbows should not be deterred by a 5,000-piece MOQ; the right move is to ask for a mill run, which typically prices 10–18% above the catalog rate but ships in 4–6 weeks [S5]. The same price band — US$0.06/pc for commodity galvanized threaded elbows up to US$30/pc for special-grade BW fittings — defines the sanity-check envelope for a steam RFQ returned from current Chinese and Indian suppliers [S5].

Surface finish is the last line on the RFQ: black (as-formed), varnish, galvanized (hot-dip, cold, electro, bake), or coated [S3]. For steam, black or varnish is the carbon-steel default; galvanizing is only required where the fitting is in a corrosive atmosphere outside the insulation jacket. A buyer who writes "galvanized" on a carbon-steel elbow without thinking will pay 20–35% more and add 2–3 weeks to the lead time — this is one of the classic unnecessary upgrades that quietly inflate steam RFQ totals.
