What a line-interactive UPS actually is, and where it sits in the topology stack

A line-interactive UPS passes utility AC through an autotransformer under normal conditions and uses that same transformer to buck or boost voltage without draining the battery; the inverter only takes over on outage [S1][S2]. This places it between offline (passive standby) and online double-conversion in both cost and protection level.
