Industrial buyers chasing the cheapest molded cord almost always end up re-specifying within 12 months, because the cord was the wrong variant for the load profile, the connector family, or the ambient. A power cord assembly is a four-variable decision: input voltage class, conductor gauge, plug/receptacle pattern, and outer-jacket compound. Each variable has a numeric spec, a governing standard, and a duty-cycle consequence when it is misread.

For a 20 A 125 V server-room PDU feed the right answer is typically a NEMA 5-20P on 12 AWG SJTW; for a 50 A 125/250 V RV pedestal the answer is NEMA 14-50P on 6/3 + 8/1 AWG [S4]; for a -48 V telecom rectifier the answer is a 3-conductor DC plug kit landed with 13 mm strip length per the OEM build sheet [S1]. Same component family, completely different assemblies.

Voltage Class and Current: The First Filter

AC power cord assemblies in commercial and light-industrial service cluster around four ratings: 125 V/10 A, 125 V/15 A, 125 V/20 A, and 250 V/30 A; higher-power classes (125/250 V at 50 A, three-phase 250 V at 30-50 A) are reserved for ranges, RV pedestals, EVSE, and welders. For outdoor continuous service, the W rating is non-negotiable, and oil resistance is a separate attribute — "SJTW" is not equivalent to oil-resistant. For high-temp server-room feed (PDU to cabinet), most data-center specs call for SJT or SJTW with a 105 °C conductor insulation (the "T" inside the jacket rating) even when the jacket itself is 60 °C, because the limiting factor is the plug body, not the cable. For DC rectifier drops, the OEM kit supersedes generic ratings because the plug and strain relief are matched to a specific conductor range [S1].

Telecom DC drops are a separate procurement channel entirely: OEM-supplied plug kit, three-conductor (return, chassis ground, -48 V or -60 V), 13 mm strip length, polarity-marked at the connector, jacket usually THHN or equivalent inside the chassis [S1]. Replacement consumer cords, such as the Dyson DC14 assembly, are pattern-specific to a single appliance and are not interchangeable across vacuum or tool brands even when the connector shape looks identical [S5].

Who Should NOT Pick the Cheapest Molded Cord

Three buyer profiles should reject the generic 6 ft SJT cord every time. Industrial welders and 30 A machinery need 10 AWG or 8 AWG SOOW regardless of plug pattern; the cord's voltage drop at 30 A on 16 AWG exceeds 4 % at 25 ft, which is enough to trigger NEMA derating and degrade tool performance. Outdoor RV and construction site feeds at 50 A must use 6/3 + 8/1 AWG with a NEMA 14-50P or matching locking pattern; a 10 AWG 30 A cord on a 50 A pedestal trips the pedestal breaker under any sustained load [S4]. Telecom -48 V or -60 V DC builds must use the OEM plug kit because the connector, wire strip length, and polarity keying are part of the safety listing — substituting a generic AC cord voids the DC fault clearance and will fail inspection [S1].

For these high-consequence duties, the right next step is to confirm three numbers on the spec sheet: conductor gauge in AWG per leg, jacket temperature rating in °C, and connector pattern with the right hot/neutral/ground geometry for the receptacle on the load.
