In a water or wastewater plant, a portable infrared thermometer is used for non-contact surface checks on pipes, clarifier weirs, digester shells, motor housings, and pump bearing pads, not for measuring the process water itself.
Process water is opaque, highly variable in emissivity, and often agitated, so a handheld IR unit sees only the surface film and is best treated as a screening tool; a contacting probe (bimetal thermometer or RTD) stays the reference. Choose a unit whose lower span reaches 0-100°C and whose upper span reaches at least 500-1000°C for digester or incinerator work.
Critical Specifications: Range, D:S Ratio, Emissivity
A water utility spec should call for a temperature range of at least -50 to 950°C, a 20:1 distance-to-spot (D:S) ratio, adjustable emissivity from 0.10 to 1.00, and a sub-1-second response time. ProSense's IR-G1150 lists -50 to 1150°C with a 20:1 D:S, 0.5 s response, and 0.10-1.00 emissivity [S2].
Emissivity is the dominant error source: polished stainless reads around 0.05-0.10, painted or oxidised carbon steel around 0.80-0.95, and wet concrete or sludge crusts 0.93-0.96. Without manual emissivity adjustment, a 0.05 setting on oxidised steel can produce errors of tens of degrees; lockable emissivity at the probe, or a small reference table taped to the unit, is the simplest field fix. The GAOTek GAOTek-IIT-370 confirms that the emissivity-adjustable model class is a mainstream product line, not a niche option [S3].
Optics, Laser Targeting, and Field-of-View
Two-laser coincidence targeting is the safer default for plant work: the reading is correct only where the two beams meet, so a 12:1 D:S at 300 mm lights a 25 mm spot. The Lamotte IR thermometer specifies 12:1 FOV with two converging lasers at 12 inches, dual-laser design with blue and red backlight shift on alarm [S7].
For work across clarifier walkways, digester roofs, or scaffolding, a 20:1 D:S gives roughly 25 mm spot at 500 mm stand-off, which keeps the operator off ladders and clear of steam plumes. A single-laser pointer marks the centre of a larger cone, so on polished or reflective stainless, off-centre shots can hit adjacent pipe lagging instead of the target.
Built-in Dew-Point Detection: When It Pays Off

For water plants, condensation control on tanks, valve manifolds, and outdoor switchgear matters, and a dual-function IR + dew-point instrument pays for itself quickly. The Tramex IRT2DP combines a dual-laser non-contact IR sensor with ambient RH and dew-point temperature in one handheld, with tricolour light and audible indication as the surface temperature approaches dew point [S5].
This matters before any coating, painting, or insulation job on a water-retaining structure. Painting over a substrate that is within 3-5°C of dew point is the most common cause of coating failure, and a combined instrument removes the need to carry a separate hygrometer and IR gun plus a lookup table.
Comparison: General-Purpose vs Dew-Point vs Wide-Range
Three instrument classes cover most utility tasks. General-purpose utility units, such as the RayTemp 8 with -60 to +500°C IR and -64 to +1370°C Type K input, suit HVAC, motor, and bearing checks, but rely on a separate contact probe for wet or low-emissivity targets [S6].
Wide-range industrial units, such as the Labtron IT-100LS at -50 to 1400°C with dual-laser pointer, voice control, backlight, and alarms, handle digester and flare work where flame or stack temperatures exceed 1000°C [S1]. Dew-point combination units, like the Tramex IRT2DP, add RH and surface-dew delta at the cost of a narrower IR span.
Decision rule: digester, boiler, or flare zone, take the wide-range unit; clarifier, chemical room, or coating prep, take the dew-point unit; general maintenance and motor bearing work, a mid-range model is enough.
Selection Criteria Specific to Water Treatment

Five criteria drive the pick. First, optical resolution: minimum 12:1 D:S, 20:1 preferred for elevated work. Second, emissivity: must be adjustable, not fixed, with a digital readout of the set value; this is non-negotiable for stainless and coated pipework. [S2]
Third, ingress protection: minimum IP54, ideally IP65 for outdoor clarifier and digester walkways; the optics housing is the usual failure point when steam or spray condenses on a cold lens. Fourth, response time: under 1 s is the industry baseline, and 0.5 s is preferred for conveyor or moving-parts work where the spot drifts between trigger and read [S2].
Fifth, ergonomics and power: 9 V battery or rechargeable, auto-off, dual °C/°F, min/max/avg/diff, data hold, and at least a 12-point memory so a walking inspector can log without writing on a clipboard. The Labtron IT-100LS lists dual-laser pointer, backlight, voice readout, temperature alarm, and built-in memory, covering the ergonomics axis [S1].
Limitations, Failure Modes, and Process Limits
Handheld IR units cannot see through glass, and on plastic or FRP pipe they read only the surface film, not the fluid inside. Steam, fog, and aerosol plumes between the gun and the target scatter the IR beam and read cold by 5-20°C; step back, wait for plume lift, or shoot the underside of an elbow where steam has not yet formed. Sunload on outdoor targets in direct sun is a second large error source, and a shaded target or a matt-black tape patch with known emissivity is the standard fix. The Proxxi T600A is a consumer-grade unit pitched at water, baking, and kitchen work; suitable for spot checks in non-critical loops, but it should not be used as the primary instrument for digester, boiler, or any safety-relevant temperature [S4].
A related tool class, the in-line infrared level sensor, is a different instrument: it is a fixed turbidity or suspended-solids sensor using IR optics in the 870 nm band with 4-30 VDC power, 4-20 mA output, IP68, and SS316L wetted parts, installed directly in the basin, not handheld [S8]. A hand-held IR thermometer and an IR level sensor are not substitutes; for continuous basin monitoring, use the fixed sensor, and for spot maintenance checks, use the handheld.
Standards, Sourcing, and Field Verification

Blackbody calibration at known fixed points (0°C ice bath, 100°C boiling water) is the cheapest field check, and any handheld reading off by more than 2°C against a boiling-water reference should be sent for factory calibration.
