The decision tree hinges on four variables, body material (brass, ductile iron, WCB carbon steel, SS316, CPVC), seat type (metal vs resilient), size (DN50 to DN1200), and accessory package (plain disc vs outside lever-and-weight vs spring-assisted), because each of these moves both upfront cost and the maintenance interval that follows [S2][S4][S8].

Purchase Price Anchors by Material and Size

Who a Swing Check Is For (and Who It Isn't)

A swing check is the right call for unidirectional liquid service at relatively constant flow, including pump discharge, fire-water mains, cooling-water loops, and municipal water lines, where the full-bore opening and low pressure drop deliver real energy savings and the disc dynamics are easy to characterise [S2][S4][S6]. It is also the right call when dirty or fibrous media are absent, because solids jam the disc against the seat, the AVK datasheet explicitly limits its Series 41 to liquids "free of solids and fibrous impurities" [S2]. A swing check is the wrong call for pulsating flow, for very low cracking pressure (a 0.05 bar minimum is typical, per the brass datasheet [S1]), and for vertical upward flow with no spring or weight assist, where a balancing valve or a different check type is more reliable. CPVC bodies also cap out well below the metal alternatives on size and pressure, so large-diameter or high-pressure chemical service is not their envelope [S3].

Total-cost ranking, lowest to highest first-cost, generally runs brass plumbing (DN15-DN50) [S1] to ductile-iron resilient-seat (DN50-DN300) [S2] to WCB carbon-steel lever-and-weight (DN50-DN600) [S4] to SS316 / CF8M full-bore (DN50-DN1200) [S8], but the lifetime ranking inverts for corrosive and high-temperature services where cheap brass or unlined iron fails first. For procurement, the right gate to enforce is API 594 / ASME B16.34 compliance on the line, ISO 5208 or API 598 test certification, and a datasheet that names body, disc, seat, hinge-pin, and gasket materials with the matching standards, not a one-line "swing check" SKU [S1][S2][S4][S9].
