For a practical spec, the three decision gates are (1) the motor's full-load current and the protector's adjustable current range, (2) the trip class (Class 10, 20 or 30) versus the motor's locked-rotor thermal limit, and (3) coordination with the upstream short-circuit protective device. The two umbrella standards that every motor protector must clear for general industrial sale are IEC 60079-series for explosive atmospheres (where applicable) and the regional installation rules such as the National Electrical Code (NEC) in North America, with IEC motor-protection product standards governing the device itself [S4]. For thermal protectors specifically, IEC 60730-1 (automatic electrical controls) and UL 60947-4-1 (low-voltage switchgear, motor protectors) are the typical conformity routes, and major vendors publish third-party certification marks against them.
